This is the kind of design that I am really know for: Nature inspired leaf stitching.  It is my signature.  It is SOOOOO much work.

I don’t know why I keep doing it.  Every leaf is cut by hand and pinned onto each dress to find the right balance and placement.  Then we stitch down the leaves with a safety stitch and afterwards the real creative work starts.  All the veins in each leaf and all the stems are sewn.  They are sewn with a sewing machine yes, but it is all improvised.  Start, stop, turn, swerve, stop, reverse and so on.  It takes a good eye and extreme control over the machine.  It is like drawing with thread.

We have only one of this dress left and it is an XS.

Ahhhhhhhhh.

The Halo headbands.  We have had them in our store now for a few months and thanks to Kate Duchess of Cambridge, they are a huge fashion item this Fall.  Yes, you heard it, I said Fall.  That is because all the Fall collections are starting to come into the store.  I will be doing a huge delivery of new designs this week and we already have the B-line Fall collection selling out fast.  That is not to say that you can’t still peruse our sale rack if you crave a last little treat.  But, back to headbands….

Maybe you can’t imagine an occasion for one of these, but I can help with that.  Are you going to a weeding?  A pic-nik? A birthday party?  Are you a waitress looking to get more tips?  Do you have short hair that you are trying patiently to grow out?  Are you cruising for a date on ladies night?

If you are a future bride, you should definitely come and see what we have to decorate your head.  I also make veils and fascinators for weddings.

This last one is so classy and classic.  It is lace decoupage and hand-sewn beads….so pretty and fancy.  It would look amazing in black hair.

All available at Boutique Katrin Leblond right now.

This is one of my favourite costumes from last year’s Smirkus production.  We stitched all the veins of each leaf mixing silk leaves that we made in the studio with fake maple leaves that i found.  It took a few days of appliquee work.

One that note, the Fall collection is starting to arrive in the store.  Come take a look!

I love getting wedding pictures in the mail.  It is a gift to see where my dresses go and what occasions they are worn for.  This is the wedding picture of Jennifer and Andrea. (Thanks guys!). They were a delight to serve and play dress up with.  Obviously I only did the outfit on the right.

@ Jennifer and Andrea:  You both look so genuinely happy and radiant in this photo.  I wish you a lifetime of falling in love with each other anew every day.  xoxo

I know it was months ago and I haven’t been posting a lot lately, but here are my pictures from the opening night of the Jean Paul Gaultier show in Montreal.  It is the all time best show ever!

Go see it!

Don’t miss it!

I was very inspired and have been back to see it again since the opening night.  It was so crazy that night, that invited guests had to line up for hours just to get into the Museum.

The first series of photos below were taken while Krin and I took were in the line up to get into the Museum.

Me wearing a turquoise silk bustier ($158-258) and Russian Bracelet ($12-16) and Silk chiffon scarf ($22-32).

My muse and circus super star Karin Maren Haglund wearing the Purple Bella dress ($278)

This Rosebud necklace is all gypsy and all modern ($248)

The slim fit crinoline in multi reds ($140) available in 12 different colors at Boutique Katrin Leblond 4647 blvd. St-Laurent

The Museum of Fine arts in Montreal decked out in JPG sailor stripes.

Just before we went in to see the show I bumped into Rosie Godbout.  Her atelier is upstairs from mine and she is an incredible textile artist who specializes in felting and makes the most amazing winter coats.

Here we are inside the show admiring and stealing pictures on the down low.

My fave dress above and Krin’s fave below.

the famous Can Can dress was on a catwalk of moving mannekins.  The installation of the show is superb and very fresh.

I leave you with this picture of the most incredible shoe collage:  heels inside wedge sandals!  WOW!

This is the last of my Artforms in Nature posts.  I have really paid a tribute to artist and naturalist Ernst Haeckel.  I leave you with a beautiful series of full colour plates showcasing larger lifeforms.  Some might not seem so beautiful at first (the frogs!!!), but I insist, there is inspiration there for someone.

The orchids are just incredible.  I made a series of dresses once for the Cirque du Soleil based on orchids.  Below are two dresses by Michelle Ferranti that served as my inspiration for that project.

Here are the frogs!!  Ha ha!  They are so hideous and yet i have nothing against frogs.  Actually, I think frogs are pretty important and I own a pair of little gold frog stud earrings that are quite delightful.  We all loved Kermit the frog.  Below I have added the image of a dress by John Galliano that seems kind of froggy to me.

This plate is classic Faberge egg inspiration.  It is just so perferct.  Look at he symmetry and ornament and texture.

You don’t need to be a genius to be an artist.  You just need to take the time to do it.  A lot of the work that I do is detail oriented and time consuming.  Other designers look at my work and think I’m crazy to be cutting out shapes, making stencils and drawing with thread.  But to me, it’s just what I do.  Come see the new Spring 2011 collection at the boutique.  I have been adding new styles every week.

This is a series of touching personal moments captured in the change rooms of my boutique.  The mother and daughter were invited to come and try on clothes together.  I love dressing mothers and daughters at the same time.  Sisters are really fun too.  The interactions that we get to witness are so beautiful and meaningful.  It is the gift that our clients give to us.

These photos were taken by artist-photographer Marie Cornellier.  She has a gift for getting people to show their most beautiful and touching selves.

Are you feeling the pastels yet?  Are there easter eggs on the countertop at the depanneur?  If you are not into the commercial hype of Western holidays, maybe you can find solace in the natural rhythm of the earth.  It’s really just about Spring.  It’s about sprouting, budding, beginning, hatching…it is that moment on the cusp of growth.  It’s about birth.  Or shall we say re-birth, since Winter will come again and then another Spring will kindle re-birth again.

These images are for you to savour.  Taste them as if you are eating a meringue.  Let them melt on your tongue.  As much as they are about high-fashion, they are absolutely not about the clothes.  They are a feeling, a mood, a moment.  The crumbling broken statues and columns evoke a feeling of walking among the ruins of an old temple.  The light and the colours are fresh.  It is the morning.  The day is new.

I see a still moment.  A moment to breathe.  A time out.  A little gift of time alone with yourself.  Just look out the window and stay there for a few minutes.  Your nervous system will adjust to the slower rhythm, the lack of stimulation.  Try.  See how hard it is to do that.

And here is a little facial tip from Michelle Phan.  She is my make-up teacher.  I came to make-up late in life (like, last year) and have been really enjoying playing with colours and powders thanks to her.

This magical dress is the last of it’s kind.  The production was a very small run.  I think I only made six dresses.  One of them was purchased as a wedding dress by a beautiful older woman getting married for the first time in her 50′s.  Here is the last dress.  If I remember well, it is a small….maybe a medium.  If it is meant for you, here it is waiting in the shining spot light.

The Spring collection is almost completely in the store now.

My creative process this year involved a lot of cutting and pasting and collage-ing with a glue stick and small scissors.  I felt like I was making clothes for paper dolls.  It was the first time we had ever done anything like this in the studio, but it allowed us to visualize and plan so that the whole collection fit together better than ever.

You can see my little notes where I was planning how many items to cut of what size in which colour.

This year’s process also included a spiritual connection to all our wishes and hopes and desires.  The women on my team, including my mother, each told me three things they would wish for the world if they could change anything they wanted.  These wishes/blessings were then assigned to individual garments.  Below you can see the note “Celebrating Native Women” on the long feather dress.

Come and see for yourself.  The store looks more beautiful than ever!  I am crazy proud of this year’s collection and all the magic that will flow out into my community.

Hello all my beloved ladies,

You have probably had a slight moment of irritation with me at one moment or other when you are ready to cash out with your pile of beautiful new clothes and I tell you that we don’t have plastic bags.  Then I tell you that we have eco bags that we sell for $3.  The you tell me that you already have a lot of eco bags at home and don’t want another one.  I feel awkward and uncomfortable every time this happens.  I don’t want you to be mad at me over a plastic bag.

The article below is not about fashion and I didn’t write it.  It is why we are not giving out plastic bags at the store.

The plastic found in a single turtle’s stomach

Hundreds of shards reveal the threat to wildlife from debris floating in our seas

By Adam Sherwin

Thursday, 24 March 2011

The debris from the stomach of a green sea turtle

This collection of hundreds of coloured, jagged shards could be a work of abstract art. But the objects in the photograph to the right are the contents of the stomach of a sea turtle that lost its battle with plastic pollution.

Environmentalists examined the stomach of the juvenile turtle found off the coast of Argentina. The bellyful of debris that they found is symptomatic of the increasing threat to the sea turtles from a human addiction to plastic.

Sea turtles often mistake plastic items for jellyfish or other food. Ingesting non-biodegradable ocean pollution can cause a digestive blockage and internal lacerations. The result can be debilitation, followed by death.

Humans currently produce 260 million tons of plastic a year. When those products are pulled into the sea’s currents, the plastics do not biodegrade but are broken into smaller pieces which are consumed by marine life at the bottom of the food chain. An examination of gastrointestinal obstruction in a green turtle found off Florida discovered that, over the course of a month, the animal’s faeces had contained 74 foreign objects, including “four types of latex balloons, different types of hard plastic, a piece of carpet-like material and two 2-4mm tar balls.”

The biggest rubbish “swill” is the North Pacific Gyre, known as the “great garbage patch”, which is the size of Texas and contains an estimated 3.5 million items of detritus, ranging from toys to toothbrushes.

“The oceans have become one giant refuse bin for all manner of plastics. All sea turtle species are particularly prone and may be seriously harmed,” according to the biologists Colette Wabnitz, from the University of British Columbia, and Wallace Nichols, of the California Academy of Sciences. In “Plastic Pollution: An Ocean Emergency”, they write: “Continued research on the impacts of plastic on the ocean environment and human health is likely to conclude the problem is worse than currently understood.

“The symptom of this growing crisis can be seen inside and on sea turtles as well as their oceanic and terrestrial habitats. Bold initiatives that directly confront the source of plastic pollution, redesign packaging and rethink the very idea of ‘throwaway culture’ are urgently required.”

Almost all marine species, from plankton to whales, have ingested plastic. But, even in small quantities, plastic can kill sea turtles due to obstruction of the oesophagus or perforation of the bowel, the biologists said.

Fifty out of 92 turtles found dead, stranded on the shorelines of Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil, had ingested a “considerable amount of man-made debris”.

Because young sea turtles indiscriminately feed on pelagic material, “high occurrences of plastic are common in the digestive tract of these small sea turtles,” the biologists write.

They are asking visitors to help reduce the threat from plastics during visits to coastal areas by bringing their own reusable bags and food containers, and avoiding plastic-bottled drinks.

This is the wedding dress for the bride of a dear old friend.  They are getting married this summer barefoot in the grass by the side of a lake – good ole’ hippie style.  On a little road trip to Montreal this January they made time to shop for her dress at my store.  We wanted something off the rack that could be customized for her to feel self-expressed and unique.  Working with fabric pins and scarfettes, we were able to come up with an embellishment that suited her curves and colouring.  Look at how the blue leaves bring out her stunning blue eyes.  The side slit on the dress is actually quite racey and the sheer voile just barely covers her bum.  Somehow she pulls it off perfectly, looking both classy and cute and sexy and just perfectly “Lena”.

When we took the dress back to the studio, i steamed all the pins off the back of the embellishments and stitched them to the dress.  On the back of the dress, I continued the stitching of an ivy and leaf pattern in blue and bronze coloured thread.  I added some sequins by hand and voila!  A custom dress is born!

It was a true honour for me to be asked to make her wedding dress.  Every time a friend asks me to make their dress, i feel really blessed and happy.

It seems I am not the only designer totally inspired by Haeckel’s art.  Below you will see the most incredible dress by artists/designer Toolgrrl (that is her etsy name).

It’s inspired by an Ernst Haeckel illustration of a stinkhorn fungus from the 19th century. The relationship this piece has with the environment isn’t just limited to mushrooms, though, as every inch of the dress is made with recycled materials.

And now for some mushroom art that fits into our everyday.  This is the new toadstool skirt that we are currently selling at the boutique.  It is playful and clearly a reminder of the fact that Spring is on its way.  YAY!

How many of you have sea shells in your bathroom?  I know I do.  I even have starfish spray painted silver and driftwood that I lugged home from vacation.  This post explores the connection between Nature, as illustrated by the drawings of Ernst Haeckel, and our desire to surround ourselves with objects from the ocean.

Below are some amazing contemporary furniture designs by a company called ARKTURA.  I am totally smitten with the lines and shadows that these pieces cast.  I am also a fan of the colour options they provide…what not just black and chrome?, but also plum, red and aqua…how do I choose?

a little bit of the real thing in pink and purple and red ( may favourite colours)…

…and a little bit of happy homemaker throwing an ocean themed dinner party!

Below are the sqid pages.  mmm, yum!

We have this pin in the store.  It is by an American artist called MamasLittleBabies.

Now this tops it all for me.  Michelle McCoskey has crochet this squid scarf.  I can’t say that I would wear it, but i was thrilled when I found theses images online and I hope you enjoy the ridiculousness and effort that went into making this masterpiece of crafty kitsch!

I find this woman and her dress very inspiring.  She is stunningly beautiful and her pose is very masculine and confident.  Her dress is a total work of art!  I would love to know who this woman is.  Is she an artists or a designer posing for a story?  If anyone knows who she is, I am curious.  Please leave a comment.

This is now in my top two favourite costumes of all times.  It was comissioned for hoola hoop artist Danièle Béchard.  She was a delight to design for and I was very inspired when I was making this little number.  She wanted a skirt that she could roll her hoops up over without getting caught in it.  She needed it to be washable, durable and yet still look luxurious and sexy.  The initial challenge was convincing her to add a contrast colour outside of the red/black colour palette that we had decided upon.  I knew that we would need blues and cools to make the red pop (pink was not an option for Daniele…she hates it) and so all of the stitching and embellishments are done with turquoise, blue, lavender and white for highlights.  There is a lace up in the back that we cannot see in these pictures.

Remember the Rainbow Bride, well here she is again!  She sent me photos from her destination wedding and it really looks like a dream.  The inspiration for the dress was colour colour colour with a little bit of playful and a lot of whimsey.  The gown is a fully corseted bodice with rosette and leaf appliqué at the neckline.  The petticoat was made from all different colours of tulle with an overlay of mossy green tulle to subdue them all and harmonize the rainbow.  The ribbons at the hem added a little bit of gypsy folklore and are some of my favourite ribbons from my private collection.  I dig deep into the good stuff when I am making a special order dress.  The butterfly sequins are all hand cut and appliquéd onto the skirt of the dress.  This is one of my all time favourite wedding dresses.  It suits Betsey and fit her beautifully.

Betsy, I just love how the cake matches it all.  It looks like it was a truly magnificent wedding day and you and your hubby look very well matched.  I wish you a magical journey into married life and I hope you are laughing together into old age. – Kat
