I have been working on this raincoat design for over a year.

It has a huge hood that can be rushed in two directions:  around the face and down the centre back.  This allows you to adjust for pouring rain, romantic strolls or pull it all the way back into a ruffle collar.

It has two buttons and a belt that ties around the waist.  The coat is embellished in the centre back with appliqué and ribbons.

I made it in blue, green and black.  There is a black denim version of the same coat for fall that is not waterproof.  The coat is both feminine and functional.  I promise it will protect you from the rain.  It has a full skirt that give it a bit of a timeless vintage feel.  I call it the Fairytale raincoat.

I know it was months ago and I haven’t been posting a lot lately, but here are my pictures from the opening night of the Jean Paul Gaultier show in Montreal.  It is the all time best show ever!

Go see it!

Don’t miss it!

I was very inspired and have been back to see it again since the opening night.  It was so crazy that night, that invited guests had to line up for hours just to get into the Museum.

The first series of photos below were taken while Krin and I took were in the line up to get into the Museum.

Me wearing a turquoise silk bustier ($158-258) and Russian Bracelet ($12-16) and Silk chiffon scarf ($22-32).

My muse and circus super star Karin Maren Haglund wearing the Purple Bella dress ($278)

This Rosebud necklace is all gypsy and all modern ($248)

The slim fit crinoline in multi reds ($140) available in 12 different colors at Boutique Katrin Leblond 4647 blvd. St-Laurent

The Museum of Fine arts in Montreal decked out in JPG sailor stripes.

Just before we went in to see the show I bumped into Rosie Godbout.  Her atelier is upstairs from mine and she is an incredible textile artist who specializes in felting and makes the most amazing winter coats.

Here we are inside the show admiring and stealing pictures on the down low.

My fave dress above and Krin’s fave below.

the famous Can Can dress was on a catwalk of moving mannekins.  The installation of the show is superb and very fresh.

I leave you with this picture of the most incredible shoe collage:  heels inside wedge sandals!  WOW!

Are you feeling the pastels yet?  Are there easter eggs on the countertop at the depanneur?  If you are not into the commercial hype of Western holidays, maybe you can find solace in the natural rhythm of the earth.  It’s really just about Spring.  It’s about sprouting, budding, beginning, hatching…it is that moment on the cusp of growth.  It’s about birth.  Or shall we say re-birth, since Winter will come again and then another Spring will kindle re-birth again.

These images are for you to savour.  Taste them as if you are eating a meringue.  Let them melt on your tongue.  As much as they are about high-fashion, they are absolutely not about the clothes.  They are a feeling, a mood, a moment.  The crumbling broken statues and columns evoke a feeling of walking among the ruins of an old temple.  The light and the colours are fresh.  It is the morning.  The day is new.

I see a still moment.  A moment to breathe.  A time out.  A little gift of time alone with yourself.  Just look out the window and stay there for a few minutes.  Your nervous system will adjust to the slower rhythm, the lack of stimulation.  Try.  See how hard it is to do that.

And here is a little facial tip from Michelle Phan.  She is my make-up teacher.  I came to make-up late in life (like, last year) and have been really enjoying playing with colours and powders thanks to her.

I find this woman and her dress very inspiring.  She is stunningly beautiful and her pose is very masculine and confident.  Her dress is a total work of art!  I would love to know who this woman is.  Is she an artists or a designer posing for a story?  If anyone knows who she is, I am curious.  Please leave a comment.

This is now in my top two favourite costumes of all times.  It was comissioned for hoola hoop artist Danièle Béchard.  She was a delight to design for and I was very inspired when I was making this little number.  She wanted a skirt that she could roll her hoops up over without getting caught in it.  She needed it to be washable, durable and yet still look luxurious and sexy.  The initial challenge was convincing her to add a contrast colour outside of the red/black colour palette that we had decided upon.  I knew that we would need blues and cools to make the red pop (pink was not an option for Daniele…she hates it) and so all of the stitching and embellishments are done with turquoise, blue, lavender and white for highlights.  There is a lace up in the back that we cannot see in these pictures.

Isn’t she fabulous?  Just look at this lady…stylish, multitalented and totally self-made star.  I met Robyn in 2008 when she worked as an intern in my studio.  She did sewing, cutting and helped to grow the business in it’s early years.  She invested a lot of heart in all that she did.  Within a year she was also the most beloved big sister/baby sitter/best friend to my manager’s daughter Aya, taking her horseback riding and swimming.  Where do you find an intern like that, I ask you?

This is Robyn today.  I think she looks stunning.  I might add that she has always looked this good.  She used to be the only one in the studio with full make-up and heels.  The rest of us were barefoot and wearing our cozies.  I was still living in my studio at the time and often showed up for work in the most unglamorous outfit of all: my pijamas.   Robyn once told me that she brought her headshots to modeling agencies and they all turned her away, telling her to loose 15 pounds first.  Well, that was not an option for Robyn.  If you read her blog, you will come to learn that she loves food about as much as she loves fashion.  So, Robyn marched away from the modeling agencies horrified that the industry is still that narrow minded and started taking pictures of herself.  Thus her blog was born:  Fashionista514.com

Robyn is also the reason our blog was born.  She started it, bought the domain name, set up WordPress and wrote the first 100 posts.  Thank you Robyn.   It wouldn’t have happened without you.  You are an amazing manifester!  You are a star!

Above are pictures taken by Barrie Macleod at out photo booth party last year in the store.  Robyn did the make-up for over 60 women who were all undressing and getting dolled up for the camera.  These team shots were taken at the end of a long night.

I love this picture.  It was taken the day before my fashion show last year.  I was dropping by fashion week to deliver my press packs and I saw Robyn in the lounge.  Italian Vague (am I remembering this correctly Robyn?) had a photographer there who took a picture of her (without me) just because she looked that good.  This week she is celebrating her 1 year anniversary as the founder and star and writer of Fashionista514.  Congratulations!  We love you!

Here is my take-two on the analyses of how artists are influenced by Nature.  Sometimes we really stretch the truth, but sometimes the source of our inspiration is very close indeed.  I have included two other artists in this series:  Alexander McQueen (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) and Karl Blossfeldt (June 13, 1865 – December 9, 1932).   McQueen, who died last year, was one of the best headpiece designers of all time.  Below, I have included photos that seem to be directly influenced by the shapes and forms in Haeckels prints.

This is from McQueens SS 2008 collection.

I mean, really?  Is this not totally crazy awesome to see how closely linked all creativity is!  We are all drinking from the same creative well!

Also SS2008 McQueen

These three images really need to all be looked at together. Above we have shapes that look to me like armour, shields and Samurai headpieces.  Below we have another McQueen headpiece from his last collection FW 2011.  Then below that, I have inserted three photos from early nature photographer Karl Blossfeldt.  The references are stunning!

German photographer Karl Blossfeldt (June 13, 1865 – December 9, 1932) worked in Berlin and  is best known for his close-up photographs of plants.  It is documented that he was influenced by the the illustrations of Ernst Haeckel as a scientist and artist.

This is the fabulous Karin Maren Haglund:  circus performer, fashion show artistic director, wife, mother and great friend.

I love that I get to make her costumes.  I feel honoured that she chooses me time and time again as her costume designer.  This was our newest collaboration.  It ‘s for her wheel act.

It highlights her fantastically toned sexy-mama body and swooshes when she moves.  The body suit is a one piece with gaucho wing legs.  The back and straps are a-symmetrical with crisscrossing lines, ruffles and  an amazing beaded collar piece that I saved from one of my grandmothers old Parisian haute-couture dresses.  I am very proud of this creation.

Here are some casual pictures that she took backstage posing and looking adorable.  Room #6.

Krin on tour with her little munchkin circus child Ole.

Not only does she blow me away with her talent and showmanship, her amazing ability to entertain, but she is a great role model for how to have a kid and still be yourself.

Love of love to all the circus families that just do it!  -Kat

My friend Rebekah used to dance in the tits and glitz shows of Montreal past.   They wore pasties and sparkles and entertained at the casinos and cabarets.  These images are not from Montreal, however, they are all vintage costume post cards from shows in Paris.  I don’t know when these images date from, but am curious if anyone feels like they do.

The star lady.  I imagine that headpiece is covered in rows of sequins and beads.  I love the commitment to stars everywhere, on her dress and even her shawl is made from pieced star shapes joined at the points.

This lady is also adorned in a star.  She wears it as her bikini bottom.  She has bug like wings, or leaves at her sides.  She is seen again a few images farther down from  behind.  Her headpieces is very princess Leah and her bikini top reminds me of the points on a circus tent.

Garlands, garlands…apparently that is all one needed to look cute on stage.

The skirt bustle on this lady is just great.  More ruffles, more frills and more volume!  yeah!

Come play dress up!  COME TO MY STORE!

I am always inspired by glitz and glamour and nothing beats vintage pin-up.  These are all contemporary performers in the Burlesque Cabaret scene.  And what a scene!  These gals sing and dance and strip and act and shoot advertisements and make a good living keeping their skin milky white.  Their hair is black and set in curls and their lips are always perfectly red.  That is the style of pin-up, but these ladies are making it contemporary.

This is Camille o Sullivan, my favourite of the three.  I simply adore the black taffta busstle skirt with green silk bow.  The pleating and the hips are very modern and the bolero is similar to one currently in my design sketchbook.

The top hat with the voilette in front of her eyes is a very nice touch.

I never tire of sparkly ruby red slippers.  One day, I will carry them at my store.

In this photo I am most interested in how the undergarment is separate from the bra.  It is totally a suck-in-your-gut garment that has been transformed into a sexy corset high-waisted skirt.  Love it!

Here is Dita Von Teese sitting in a large oversized bra.  What a great stage prop.

These two images are simply great compositions with amazing lighting.  The clothing is secondary to the set.  It is the pose on the horsy bike and the big gold stripes that makes this image a total work of art!

And lastly, I present to you the cat-eyes of Immodesty Blaize.

The jewel studded corset with diamond straps is just insane over the top wonderful.  One day i want someone to hire me to make a $10,000 corset. … Covered in Svarovsky crystals and solid as a rock.

I leave you with this image of Immodesty fully covered.  These ladies always dress to the nines and I could do a whole blog post about what they wear when they are not stripping and titillating.  They are artists that are living their professional image all the way.  They stay in character wherever they go.  It is something I have been trying to explain to musicians and actresses a lot lately.  Think about your style after the show…what do you want to be seen wearing in the dressing room.. at the bar..talking to a journalist?  What do you want to be seen wearing when you are grocery shopping or signing autographs?   Your whole life is your art and there are many subtle ways to promote your craft all the time.  Dressing the part is key.

Below is an article by Andrea Hayley that I found while browsing the over 20 pages of links to Katrin Leblond stuff.

More Change Needed on Use of Ultra Thin Models,

Says Designer

By Andrea Hayley
Epoch Times Staff Created: Mar 11, 2010

Monique Larose Grisee, 75, models one of Katrin Leblond’s creations at Montreal Fashion Week. (jimmyhamelin.com)

Montreal Fashion Week had a somewhat healthier appearance this season thanks to a Quebec charter calling on fashion designers to help reduce extreme thinness in runway models.

However Katrin Leblond, a Montreal fashion designer who participated in fashion week, says it’s still difficult to find healthier-sized models in the city and the charter needs some teeth to be more effective.

“There’s no centralized industry, there’s no centralized monitoring of modeling agencies,” she says.
Leblond, who supports a more realistic portrayal of women in fashion, broke out of the pack with her own choice of models at fashion week, which included a six foot tall “extra-large model” and a 75-year-old grandma.

She says she had a hard time finding models size 6-8 to show her collection. She searched four agencies and five freelance groups, including the circus community, the acting community, and Craigslist to find her 10 models.

“Most of the agencies couldn’t even provide me with a choice of more than one or two girls of that size.”

The majority of designers are still using models size 0 and size 2, says Leblond.

“I choose size 6s and size 8s instead of 0s and 2s. They’ve got curves, they’ve got bums and boobs, and they look beautiful.”

Introduced by Quebec Culture Minister Christine St. Pierre, the charter calls on partners in all fields to work together to diminish social pressures leading to unhealthy weights.

Post fashion week last Friday, St. Pierre, along with supporters from the industry and health professionals, held a press conference and a fashion show of their own. With the goal of promoting appreciation for different body types, they featured seven models ranging from bony to average to plus sized.

The charter is voluntary and has no legal implications, St-Pierre told reporters. “A law is not a good approach.”

The prevalence of extreme thinness in runway models and in fashion industry advertising is widely understood to be a contributing factor to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, mostly in girls and women.

Although a small percentage of women are naturally extremely thin, problems arise when super thin is seen as a beauty ideal. The vast majority of people cannot achieve the ideal through healthy means, so they fall into a destructive pattern of restricted and unhealthy dieting in an attempt to feel beautiful.

According to the Quebec Association for Assistance to People Suffering from Anorexia and Bulimia, between 40,000 to 65,000 women in the province of 7.5 million suffer from eating disorders.

Runway models are notoriously the absolute thinnest in the fashion industry. They are also often very young—something that doesn’t make sense to Leblond.

“I’m not interested in having 15-year-olds on my runway. I sell clothing to 40-year-old women—how are they going to identify with a 15-year-old who weighs 100 pounds?”

The Quebec charter is the not the first effort to address extreme thinness in the industry. A furor arose a few years ago when a pair of Uruguayan sisters embarking on modeling careers died from starvation within six months of each other. One collapsed on the catwalk while the other passed away from complications arising from anorexia.

Some countries have gone so far as introducing binding regulations that seek to measure the body mass index in models, a measure that can identify a healthy body weight. However, critics claim such measures have been unsuccessful due to the challenge of calibrating measurements as well as enforcement.

In a major move last October, Germany’s highest circulation women’s magazine, Brigette, decided to stop using professional models and use average-sized women instead in an attempt to reach out to readers.

Supporters of Quebec’s charter say it is not out of the question that they will try legislative solutions in the future.

Look at this Klimt inspired image.  These textiles are crazy awesome and inspiring.

These are not all traditional wax prints, but for the most part a wax print has more than one layer of printing anyways.

How it is done: The core element in Wax Print is of course the wax. Using two deep engraved copper rollers, with the mirror image of the design, the two sides of the cotton fabric are printed with a pattern of melted wax, hence the name Wax Print. The fact that the cloth is printed on both sides enables you to wear the fabric on either side. This is the true sign of a quality wax print. Following this, the cloth is immersed in a bath of dye, often Indigo, that penetrates into the areas that are not covered with wax. After the wax as been washed off in varying stages, a negative image of the printed pattern remains on the cloth.

The next step is called a The Wax Cover.  It is a Wax Print which is enriched with one or more coloured patterns. These ‘cover’ patterns can be of very varying designs such as circles, stripes, birds, leaves, in fact any graphic form.

Even the photography blows me away and I can’t get enough of these prints.  They are beyond incredible.  They are so bold it would scare any North American Fashionista into a rabbit hole to hide and cower with her wardrobe of shlumpy grey and black minimalist modern outfits.  If the goddesses from the heavens could come down to earth and shop, I am sure that these are the fabrics they would buy for their ceremonial gowns and cloud sitting leisure wear.

High African Fashion

All of these prints are from a company called Vlisco.  They are a Dutch wax printing company that have been making high end fashion fabrics destined for the African market for over a century.

Here are the photos from the most recent collection at Vlisco.  Just stunning!

The diner en Blanc is an event the groups 2400 people together for  a picnic dinner at a secret location.

Buses picked them up at metro stations and parks.

They set up their own banquet tables and chairs.

I am a spiritual person.  I am a political person.

I believe that I am empowered to make ethical decisions that are beneficial for my community by the money I spend as an entrepreneur .  I believe that as an artist, it is my duty to create beauty for my customers to enjoy.  I believe that women deserve to be treated like goddesses entering a temple when they come in to my boutique.  They are to be served, taken care of, draped in fabric and made to feel beautiful.   I believe this from the bottom of my heart.

I have always been politically active and I have always been crafty.  There were certain points in my life where I felt guilty and pained because “just making pretty things” was not saving the planet.  Now that I am running an ecological and local manufacturing business that serves and adores women, I feel better.  I have merged my environmental activist with my feminist and with my local economist in a way that allows me to keep being a creative human being.

And here is Linda Evangelista, our Montreal-born International Fashion Icon, merging her political views that something is wrong in the world and someone should be held accountable with her love of the Madonna.  She got to play a living Madonna in a Religious procession.  I have traveled to Antigua in Guatemala to see these processions.  They walk the streets playing sad brass band music all the while carrying statues and crying for the death of Jesus.  They walk for 12-13 hours.  My main reason for traveling there was to see the “carpets” that the locals make from coloured saw dust and flowers.  The carpets are made in the street prior to the passing of the procession.  When the procession passes, the carpet gets trampled.  It was incredibly beautiful.  (This is reminding me that I should do a post about those carpets.)

I am unusually attracted the the iconography of the Madonna even though I was not raised in any form of Christianity.  To me the Madonna is the “mother”, gaia, goddess … and those are all great things.  It represents female divinity, something each woman carries within herself.

I love religious art.  I love folk art.  I love making pretty things.

It can take quite a while in life’s journey to settle into being who you truly are and not who you wish you were.
