Bonjour Katrin,

Alors j’avais juste envie de te dire “keep on the good work”!

Prend soin des tiens,

Marie-Claude

Here is my art buddie Iris!  We love crafting together.  She is a  brilliant artist (mostly watercolour) and a great graphic designer.  She designed my logo and just about all of my corporate branding. We spent a few evenings together over the holidays and decided to collaborate on some paintings together.  I dug out some blank canvases and acrylic paints.  The goal was to paint her something for her office and we decided to paint some Frida portraits.  Afterwards we felt like, with more time, we would love to paint a dozen of them, and some monkeys and parrots too.

I named this top after my current pattern-maker Patricia:  The Patti top.

She is a genius and she always understand what I am trying to convey in my sketches.  This top is the perfect expression of what I wanted:  A generous drape over the bust with a panel that gently covers the stomach, all the while staying fitted and feminine.

We made it from XS-XXL and it retails at $88

(It’s also an amazing top for breastfeeding!)

This is my number 1 pick for Fall 2013 IVKO.  It is casual, elegant and the wool is so thin and soft, it’s like magic warmth on your skin!

The button is carved and adds a beautiful touch.  No broach necessary!

The back has a center panel of  jacquard patterns that turn into a reverse-box pleat.

There is a small row of beautiful enamel buttons that go all the way down the front opening.

$270, sizes 36-44

Bright and bold these colours evoke African heat and desert sunshine.  Made of 100% cotton with silk ribbon tie, the dress fits XS-XL, hugging the body slightly, but loose enough for air to flow freely against your skin.

Here I am (at the end of a long rainy day…) in my new favourite top:  The Peace tunic in coral.  I liked the material when I purchased it, but wearing it for a few days…now I love it!  It got a lot softer and almost feels like well loved linen.  The embellishments in the coral tunic are tone-on-tone coral petals.

This is the part we do in the studio.  We take the cut pattern pieces and pin little mini petals (that are all hand cut) into position.  Then we sew them down with a decorative stitch creating a pretty ivy pattern.

Below is the cutting table covered with beautiful tiny petals and piles of the prettiest scraps.

Each set is hand cut, pinned and stitched.  Each one is a little different making it true craft.

The colour combination for the white blouse is pink, red and green.  It turned out soo pretty, but you’ll have to come to the boutique to see the final product.

Marie-Claude is one of those people with inner joy.  She dances as she walks, her enthousiasm is contageous and she smiles the most radiant of smiles!

This is a dress I made two years ago.  She wears it beautifully and inhabits it naturally.  Never shy, Marie-Claude started as a client, became and employee, and has now moved to Madagascar to take on adventure.

Here I am proudly modelling my new banana yellow jeans by Hudson.

They make me happy now eventhough I know I am pushing it with the weather.  It is still a bit early to be sporting pastel bottoms (but they are so comfortable and stretchy!!!)

They are by Hudson jeans and they also come in aqua, turquoise and pink.

I made my mother try them on because she kept telling me “they are only for young people”, and “I will look ridiculous in such tight pants”.  I gave her one size larger than I would put on someone who wants them sexy.  They made her look great! (and now she can’t decide which colour she wants).  I am pretty sure she will opt for the aqua.  Once she had them on, she was pleasantly surprised by how well they fit and how comfortable they were at the waist.  You see, this is not a low rise fashion pant.  These are high rise premium denim jeans…they just happen to be available in great colours.  You will be seeing a lot of colourful pants in stores this Spring.  Take the plunge and try them on!  Just go for it!

This project started with a phone call.  Can I make a mermaid dress for a graduation in New Jersey?  Sure.

Grace had been a client last summer. We met at my boutique when she purchased a long black dress with a pink flower print that I designed.  She told me she would be graduating in the study of Fish oils and omega-6.  Wow!  What we needed was a fish dress, not a mermaid costume.  I was very concerned that we make her a dress she could wear again to other occasions.

I started by researching images and colours for Fish oils.

I wanted to build a colour palette around a small piece of “fish scale” fabric that I had designed 10 years ago while working as a textile designer for Tricots Liesse. I guess I saved it for a special occasion like this.

I was able to make a pair of long opera sleeves, so the dress would be sleeveless and floor length.

Below you can see the sleeves and the fabric choices, as well as some small silver fish I made out of silk, but didn’t use for the final dress.

I cut silk chiffon into bias strips and notched them.  This was the water.  On the final dress I distressed the chiffon slightly with a spray bottle of water and frayed the edges a bit.

I found three little green glass fish beads!  Yoohoo!  Combined with hours of setting Svarovsky crystals, we have ourselves a gala dress!

Feathers are always very glamorous and they have been appearing in earrings for quite some time now.

I love feather jewelry because it allows you to make a big statement, add a touch of colour and feel glam all at the same time.  Feathers have a history of being worn in hats, headdresses and then there is always the feather boa.  But I want to tell you how to wear feathers in the day to day.  Why?  Because feathers allows you to make a statement without doing very much else to your  wardrobe.  They can be added to a dress or a t-shirt.

Here are a few tips when purchasing feather jewelry:

1.  There is such a thing a too much:  Unless it is for a gala event, don’t wear a fully plumed garment.

2. Be aware of how tribal feathers can look.  I love tribal fashion and all things that make you feel like a powerful woman goddess.  That being said, long feather earrings to your waist should be saved for very special ceremonial type occasions.

3. Cheap feathers will always look like they came from the dollar store.  You know the ones i mean… they come in bright colours and often have black dots.  Don’t buy them.  Don’t wear them.

4.  Be ethical in your feather consumption.  Exotic birds are killed for feathers.  Purchase feather jewelry from artists that use naturally fallen feathers, vintage feathers and rooster feathers.

5.  Take good care of your feather jewelry.  It is fragile, should not get wet, is hard to clean and can be easily lost.  Feather earrings have a tendency to fly away without you even noticing.

6. Try something other than feather earrings.  Feather earrings are a bit over done in fashion right now.  Try something a bit different:  necklaces, cuffs, belts.

This necklace presents a new take of the feather ornament.  Green is one of those colours that a lot of women feel they cannot wear (I don’t agree by the way, there are a lot of greens out there…. and there is a green for every one of you.)

It softens the framing of the face.  That means it is great combined with glasses, geometric haircuts, straight hair, up-dos and tailored clothing.

The necklace above is by Samsara Concept.  We have them at the boutique in blue, emerald and black.
