Hand made in Montreal, Laura Fafard Bags.

Made from vintage recycled ties in eco friendly high fashion style.

Store your most precious valuables and tote them around town wherever you go. These bags are so hip in their deconstructed shaping. Crafty high art! I love the vintage button details.

I love the sentimentality of vintage prints. This bag is so sweet. I like it’s femininity. It would fit so nicely into a warm toned late summer, early fall, wardrobe. Carry it with you for a walk up the mountain or a trip out of town to pick some apples.

This one is bright and cheery and needs to go with you to a breakfast brunch “resto rendez vous” on the weekend.

Bags are my favorite accessories these days. You get lots of bang for your accessory money when you buy a bag. It takes up lots more space than some of the other finishing touches we reach for when completing our looks. Bags really impact your overall look and fashion expression when you are walking down the street.

Plus you can carry stuff in it. Bonus!

Sylvie Trembley, owner and guider of the yoga center on Saint Denis worked with me (Erin) on a beautiful Styling project to decorate her yoga studio with photographs.

The challenge was to express the way yoga becomes part of the self, part of your life, and to express that in a way that honored the beauty of the people at the center through photography. I think we succeeded. Thank you Noan for expressing love through your camera, thank you Sylvie for bringing us together and challenging us all to be ourselves, Thank you to the whole yoga Sangha team, thank you to all the designers that created the clothes.

Thankyou for your beautiful, generous spirit Sylvie. I am honored to know you.

Visit the lager than life versions of these photos at the studio at 3437 rue St Denis, Montreal.

Donna truly is a jack of all trades! Shown here modeling her beautiful cami’s (which she sews, cuts, chooses the fabric for, delivers to stores and manages the inventory for – phew!), this lady truly is a powerhouse if I ever did see one!

Donna’s cami’s are essential to the KL boutique for both their beauty as well as their simplicity.

You see, most of the KL creations have multiple adornments, bold patterns and intriguing cuts when it comes to their style – to which the perfect classic or racerback cami comes in to save the day! Tank tops have become the wardrobe basic, making them perfect layering pieces and colorful pops to any outfit – simple or extravagant!

We have the cami’s in-store for the small price of $26 (made completely by Donna the one-woman-wonder, here in Montreal folks) in a rainbow of beautiful colors for you to match with your favorite dresses, pair of jeans or KL party skirt!

It’s summertime! Stock up on DB tanks!

The romance and poetry of roses is deep in our culture and our consciousness. It seems, dreams lay deep in the center of each one, under the folds of petals. Roses are like this incredible heady, intoxicating, offering and at the same time they seem, as if, they hold a mystery. Nature overwhelms when it comes to roses. Sent and colour overdose.

With roses, the artist plays on a palette of nature’s beauty.

After much searching, Katrin found real roses perfectly captured in resin.

These are possibly some of the most beautiful jewelery pieces I have yet to come across!!!

Designed in part by our very own Katrin Leblond and assembled exclusively by Sophie Lin Tran, these real roses have been coated with resin to immortalize their natural beauty!

Hung on sterling silver and 14K gold chains, embellished with real crystals and jewels… what’s not to love? These gorgeous statement pieces hit all the right feminine notes!

The weekend is almost here – hang in there and enjoy the beautiful day!

Don’t forget to spoil dad this Sunday for father’s day!

Imagine the romance of dinner under a chandelier in a beautiful dinning hall or a secret garden. Imagine whispering with twinkling mischievousness to your companion. Imagine the music of tinkling fine china. This is the world I am transported to when I see the earrings and necklaces made by Shopie Lin Tran. A moment were the sweetest and most vulnerable parts of yourself are truly powerful.

Subtly express yourself. Combine sophistication, glamor and innocence. Sophie Lin Tran studies nursing here in Montreal. She dreams of offering palliative care or Pediatrics. She will nurse your Jewelery blues away (her creations above). Sophie Lin Tran is a lovely person and we think she is awesome both for her work and for who she is as a person. Sophie enlists her brother who she loves sooooo much to help her with sales on her jewelry line. Even when she is exhausted from her work study schedule she always has a smile. Sophie creates beautiful intricate, delicate, sweet accessories for the lucky few that snap them up before they are gone. Crystals, gold, sterling, quality materials are her inspirations…. She loves nature and colours and it shows in her work. We love Sophie!!!!!!!

When the magic of the garden wains and the city streets call out their own noisy poetry. When you want to imagine yourself wandering along a street filled with Paris shops or pedaling over cobblestone. Reach for a Melissa Bolduc creation available in all is subtle architectural fashion.

Melissa Bolduc’s (Melow) pieces are now in our shop. This wrap top (above) is available in teal and lilac and black! The jacket below is in linen and is available in aubergine, black and plum for a great price at $135. I love the arcitechtural dimentions to Melissa’s designs. These jackets are so comfortable and easy care. The more you wash them the better they get. The linen “melts like butter” as Kat would say.

Come and check them out!!!

Have a beautiful Thursday!

Bisous!

Claudette Vandal’s bracelets are now in store. Completely made by hand and beaded to perfection, this gorgeously pleated piece will get you many compliments. Match Claudette’s peices perfectly by pairing them with the beautiful Emilie Desmeules skirts in store.

I love how Emily Des Meules crazy applique of intertwined threads are visually paralleled in the wire knit work of Claudette’s bracelet. I also like how the two pieces similar colour palette plays of each other. Comdining the two makes a sophisticated and artful fashion statement. Claudette knits the metal strands by hand one stitch at a time on knitting needles. Similarly, all of Emily’s fashion works of art are appliqued with love by hand, giving each one it’s own flavor. Last year Emily won one of Quebec’s prestigious emerging artist awards for textile art. She deserves it!

On a different note: We have the work of Amy Belanger in the store.

Amy Belanger’s Chipped China necklaces.

Made from recycled tea cups, saucers and plates, each pendant piece is filed smooth on all sides and hung on sterling silver chains. Amy also creates custom necklaces with your treasured heirloom china that has been passed down for generations. If you accidentally break your family’s treasured piece you can still share the memories the heirloom holds by giving each member a token pendant to wear of great great grandmother’s favourite plate.

It’s Thursday – make it a beautiful one!

World, meet the incredibly talented Montreal-based artist (and new mom) Vanessa Yanow! Safe to say one of my favorite local jewelery designers, Vanessa’s hand blown glass and zipper creations are real statement pieces! Each telling a different story, glass teardrops capture small tokens and trinkets delicately and intricately.

Vanessa has been contributing to the Montreal art scene for years now and can be found exhibiting her instillation works at various galleries both locally and worldwide! She is both a talent and a wonder, achieving muchly deserved praise wherever she sets her sights!

Her zipper necklaces are one of my favorite items to gift… I know I will always get an amazing reaction when the receiver opens the box and see’s a hand made adjustable neck piece with some of the most beautiful and imaginative materials capsulated inside hand-blown glass.

Vanessa Yanow’s spirited jewelery collection is available in the Katrin Leblond Boutique… Her earrings retail for $38 while her darling necklaces go for $45. A steal when you think of how innovative they are (not to mention that they are completely crafted by hand)!

Happy Weekending!

Jamie Brock, one of my favorite KL boutique designers has just recently gotten back from Costa Rica where she lives part-time when not designing fabulous eco-friendly fashions here in Montreal :) . Welcome home Jamie!

Jamie’s line Advika focuses on creating comfortable, fashion forward pieces entirely made from textiles such as soy, hemp, organic cotton and bamboo. Pretty cool, huh!?! She was kind enough to make me one of her incredible dresses (that I am completely obsessed with might I add), and I can’t get over it’s amazing versatility!

Above, Jamie sports one of her Advika creations in black (also available in-store in deep purple and lavender in sizes small through large).

Jamie’s sister Jen created and designed this gorgeous mosaic shower for their Costa Rica getaway home…

They also have a goat that they milk themselves that likes to hang out :)

If you love far away fashions, be sure to head to the KL Boutique to check out Katrin’s personal collection of hand-picked scarves she brought back from Thailand! They are selling for only $8!!! Can you believe?!?! There is a rainbow array that make perfect headbands, neckties and purse charms, so snap these babies up while they are still around.

Enjoy the beautiful summer day (hopefully by a pool)!

The boutique has loads of new surprises for you to discover!!!

First and foremost, this beautiful jewelery collection from Montreal artist Christine Bérubé is new and in-store! Her pieces are largely inspired by water and her memories of it during her childhood. She compares her work to the fluidity of the water that so inspires her :) .

Also, Erin Reports:

  • New in the store: Hanna Boer undies in organic cottons with funky print waist bands are being snapped up for $12 each or 2 for $20.

Hanna also makes easy to wear relaxed fit dresses for summer that she has brought into the store in a variety of colors and two styles: the dot dress and the Venus dress. Come check them out!

Hope you are all enjoying the beautiful summer day!!!

There is nothing more uplifting on a rainy day than a a colorful and positively happy umbrella (and matching rain boots if you can find)! It is an accessory so powerful it can alter miserable moods to elation (take my word for it – I can’t get enough of mine)!

As the weather has been all over the place here in the 514, here are some of the in-shop picks we have to choose from for our next (sure to be) rain day (here’s hoping not snow day!!!).

Go crazy with florals, butterflies, ladybirds, polka dots and frills!

You’ll see you won’t stop at using them for the rain… they make for great beach/picnic shade, keeping your hair picture perfect in a snowstorm and maybe if you are prone to a little magic you may just be able to get around town Mary Poppins style ;)

Just kidding!!! Unless of course you actually can…

After Sunday’s open house I decided to take a stroll down St. Laurent in search of some good/cheap grub (and of course to suck up the remainder of the beautiful day before the sun went down. So when I passed by the KL boutique how could I not go in and say hi to everyone?!?

The topic of what everyone was doing for Mother’s Day came up at one point and I got curious as to what some of the KL teams gift picks would be for the ladies in our lives that have always been there through thick and thin. Here are a few of the beautiful Cassandra’s favorites (mom approved)!

Merrowed KL vest… perfect for layering, a gorgeous peachy pink and the softest fabric that drapes on the body beautifully! Sweetness in a nutshell… I think this would look amazing on ladies with grey/white hair paired with a matching lipstick – perfect for spring and summer :) .

Floral beach/city bag! Wherever ma goes, this bag can take her! From groceries, paperwork, picnics to an afternoon at the lake, this tote will bring the style factor everywhere she goes whatever the task!

KL adjustable cotton rouching sweater – cause summer nights can get chilly and ladies require something classy to cover up… great on busts of all sizes!

A Ladylike top snap purse! Because this bag is so beautifully adorned and detailed that I can’t think of a single mom out there who wouldn’t want to add this to their wardrobe for everyday events and special occasions!

Like Cassandra’s picks? Visit her in store for more of her favorite gifts for Mom!

Save the date and spoil her rotten – May 9th, 2010 Mother’s Day

Rebekah Crown has become a staple in both Katrin’s personal and boutique life.

I had the opportunity to interview her via e-mail for a little insight on the things that make her tick, and how she conducts her craft :) .

Enjoy, and soak up her love for the arts at her vernissage (flyer with dates and times at the end of the post)!

So tell me a bit about what you do! Everything from Spiritual enlightenment to creating beautiful textiles and artwork it seems! How did you get into all of these domains?

I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Land of Enchantment, surrounded by beauty and spirituality. Native religion and art are a part of the fabric of life there. I saw many ceremonies and learned at a young age that it is the dancing of human feet that makes the earth go round, that prayer has an effect on the world, that nature is alive with spirits. I always looked for and saw the spirits in nature. Native people have always expressed spiritual ideas through design and decoration. When everything used in daily life was made by hand, everything was decorated: painted, beaded, quilled, woven. Beauty all around.
In the 1930s many artists moved to New Mexico from the eastern US because of the quality of light there. SF is 7,000 feet in the mountains and the air is very clear. So there was a colony of artists there. There are murals on the walls, interiors of homes are painted and carved, every day family restaurants are hung with art. When I was a teenager, we spent Saturday afternoons going to art openings. Many of the artists were family friends. So this atmosphere of art and ceremony seemed only natural to me. Those were the things that helped me feel most connected to my true self. When I was young, I was a dancer. Injuries led me into exploring the healing arts. I have studied, practiced and taught bodywork for 30 years. I am now mainly working with Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. You can read more about it on my website: www.spiritinbody.com

Name a few of your favourite things

:) Fabric, red wine, warm weather, baby leaves, fall colours in this corner of the world, the desert.

What inspires you when creating?

Pretty much everything. The colours in nature, city shapes, architectural detail, Islamic art, other quilters. Also my own inner process. I am exploring genealogy and am working on a series on ancestors. Having ideas is never a problem. Having the time and technique to manifest all the ideas would take many lifetimes.
How did you meet Katrin? When did you two begin your collaborations?

I met Katrin through a women’s spirituality group. We did magical activism together. One aspect of this was making ceremonial objects. She has worked in many media and we made magic wands, drums, goddess figurines in clay…lots of fun things. I think we share not only a love of beauty, but an appreciation of beauty as an important healing and spiritual force. Some consider beauty to be superficial and think art should express a concept. I heard an interview on CBC where Kat said “Beauty is a value in itself” I love this. I think our natural state is health and our bodies resonate to harmony and beauty in the environment.

What colours/fabrics/textures are you naturally drawn to?

Anything shiny. I also have been known as The Supreme High Priestess of Purple. Black should only be used or worn to show off colour. Purple goes with everything especially orange.

Any special treatments or processes that tribute to your signature styles?

I have explored many quilting and surface design techniques and am not sure I have settled on one in particular. I DO like to embellish with holographic gold thread.

What fabrics and materials are your staples?

I use mostly cotton fabrics, some I dye myself but I also do some felting and bead work. I LOVE the batiks from Bali. They have so much light and movement in them. Did I mention holographic gold thread?

What are you currently working on?

Mostly getting this show up. Since I will have to be there the whole time, I might as well be making something. I will be hand sewing and embellishing some Purple Hearts and hanging them on one wall with some messages. You can read more about this process soon on my blog.
Friends and family told me my name was not prominent enough on the posters so I am making a fabric sign of my name with lots of yes…holographic gold thread.
I just got a longarm quilting machine. This kind of quilting is like dancing with the machine. You can draw with thread. So I am learning that.
I have ideas for a series of abstract landscapes and a series with the theme ANCESTORS. This will take me at least a year.

What does creating do for you? Is it a release, an excitement, a concentration?

Creating feeds me. It is more of an obsession than anything. Pieces arise within me and demand to be made. A blissful slavery.

What do you see in your future?

One goal I have is to have a show in Santa Fe. I feel I need to develop my work more before that happens. I would also like to have a big piece in a public place in Montreal.

Where do you think your art and spiritual work will guide you?

Into more beauty

If you could travel anywhere in the world right this minute, where would you choose?

Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Malta
Rebekah made the beautiful Rose quilt above for Katrin and Mike’s wedding gift – gorgeous!

New to the KL boutique…

…and beauty you cannot surpass nor overcome when you first walk into the store and venture towards the cash – the eco-friendly collection of earrings from Arterre!

Each pair handmade with recycled fabrics (including a few pairs made from KL collection scraps to match your favorite ensembles) and tightly wrapped to give a distinct and colorful new aesthetic to an old classic. I love it when designers really play up textures and form – and this is exactly what this is!

Best part by far though? Some earrings don’t only come as a pair, but as a threesome (hey, hey, hey… keep your mind outta the gutter…) so that you can mix and match and really get the most versatility out of these exquisite jewelery box additions!

C’mon… adding a third earring is by far one of the most genius ideas I’ve heard in a long time!

Arterre also makes necklaces that are carried in the KL boutique (but I’m keeping that as a yummy surprise for later)…

Happy start to the week!

Today’s boutique artist spotlight focuses on the beautiful and enchanting work of Montreal’s own Elizabeth Johnston! Known for her Celtic knot inspired intricate jewelery designs (and passion for the Bodhran drum – an Irish frame drum), Elizabeth prides herself in only using the finest materials.

Amongst the mediums Elizabeth works with are potato pearls (fresh water mussel pearls that are naturally pastel colored but can also come dyed in brilliant hues),

Swarovski crystals, authentic gemstones, Murano and Millefiori lamp work glass beads, and silver from various indigenous economic initiatives. Each silver piece is made locally completely by hand. – WOW!

Somehow beautiful things just feel even more amazing when the fabrics and components are real, natural, and made with a whole lotta love!

Drop by the KL boutique today to view all these beautiful pieces up close and in person (believe me, the pictures just don’t do them enough justice)!

Hope life is treating you all well and you are spoiling yourself with happiness and joy!

Sometimes we just don’t realize how important it is to surround ourselves with beauty. From clothing, good food to what we hang on our walls at home and in our work spaces… everything has a say in our comfort levels and how we project ourselves to the world. Remember… beauty = power!

Clocks are the perfect adornment… every open space calls for one! It is a functional piece of art, so why not select one that brings a smile to your face and makes you slow down a minute every time you glance at the hour before rushing out :) . Where and when you can cancel out a little bit of stress and worry in your day you most absolutely should!

Here are some of the beautiful cuckoo clocks in the boutique… they require no batteries (just pull the cords and they wind up), and of course the little cuckoo birds also regularly make appearances and sing their little hearts out :)

Have a beautiful week!

Riddle me this…

What in the world is more exciting than reversible hats?!? Ummmm… nothing?!?! I’ll take reversible anything any day of the week! There is something so incredibly satisfying about one thing that can serve multiple purposes… could it have something to do with the fact that we are all forced to multitask in this day and age in our everyday lives? Could it be that we gain some kind of twisted pleasure from seeing our garments work just as hard as we do… or is it just the fact that it is double the beauty and pleasure? Well, either way it works for me – bring on the reversible!

Mémé Fontaine creates these beauties in a magnitude of colors and textures… perfect to pair with your favorite pair of jeans, KL velvet jacket and cozy sweater :)

In-person experiencing is strongly suggested and encouraged – these babies are even more captivating when you play around with how they transform :)

Hats off to ya!

I LOVE these Rob Ryan silkscreen prints (one of Katrin’s many hidden gems in the art world)… all made by hand from original ink drawings by a little team of artists all the way across the pond in London… Rob is known for his paper cutout pieces, laser cutting techniques and screen prints. How beautifully divine and precise!

What a beautiful little shopfront… love the blast of turquoise ;)

Now this, I flat out love. Who knew that Rob Ryan collaborated with uber unique jewelery designer Tatty Divine?!? For those who aren’t in the know, Katrin’s boutique has been known to carry their individual and rare necklaces… T-Rex dinosaurs, swinging acrobats… with Tatty anything can inspire a wearable piece of art!

Alongside his extensive prints, Rob has done some amazing commissioned work – my personal favorite being the cover of British Elle Magazine for London fashion week! You see, lifestyle, art, fashion… it’s all relative and interconnected…. each one influencing the next.

Visit his shop and take a look around!

If you haven’t already, join the KL team on Facebook and become a fan! Tweet with us and make sure you RSVP for next week’s showing at the 18th Edition of Montreal Fashion Week (Wednesday the 3rd of March 2010 at 6pm)! Send your name to katrin@katrinleblond.com to be put on the guestlist – hurry though, spaces are limited and filling up fast!

Tomorrow the KL team will be celebrating the beautiful store manager Erin’s birthday! Hip hip – Heray! Pictures to come (I promise)!

Have a beautiful weekend – see you back on Monday!
