Woven from 95% post consumer material, used grain sacks are collected, cleaned, ground and melted into rolls of recycled plastic, printed with Blue Q’s super fantastic graphics, cut and sewn into bags of all shapes and sizes available at boutique Katrin Leblond. 1% of the sales of the bag shown above supports the conservation work of The Nature Conservancy. Blue Q guarantees a minimum contribution of $100,000! This company is an example of one of our very few exceptions in which we felt the product and philosophy allowed us to accept importing the product and adding it to our mostly locally created collection.

Are you feeling the pastels yet? Are there easter eggs on the countertop at the depanneur? If you are not into the commercial hype of Western holidays, maybe you can find solace in the natural rhythm of the earth. It’s really just about Spring. It’s about sprouting, budding, beginning, hatching…it is that moment on the cusp of growth. It’s about birth. Or shall we say re-birth, since Winter will come again and then another Spring will kindle re-birth again.
These images are for you to savour. Taste them as if you are eating a meringue. Let them melt on your tongue. As much as they are about high-fashion, they are absolutely not about the clothes. They are a feeling, a mood, a moment. The crumbling broken statues and columns evoke a feeling of walking among the ruins of an old temple. The light and the colours are fresh. It is the morning. The day is new.
I see a still moment. A moment to breathe. A time out. A little gift of time alone with yourself. Just look out the window and stay there for a few minutes. Your nervous system will adjust to the slower rhythm, the lack of stimulation. Try. See how hard it is to do that.
And here is a little facial tip from Michelle Phan. She is my make-up teacher. I came to make-up late in life (like, last year) and have been really enjoying playing with colours and powders thanks to her.

Hello all my beloved ladies,
You have probably had a slight moment of irritation with me at one moment or other when you are ready to cash out with your pile of beautiful new clothes and I tell you that we don’t have plastic bags. Then I tell you that we have eco bags that we sell for $3. The you tell me that you already have a lot of eco bags at home and don’t want another one. I feel awkward and uncomfortable every time this happens. I don’t want you to be mad at me over a plastic bag.
The article below is not about fashion and I didn’t write it. It is why we are not giving out plastic bags at the store.
The plastic found in a single turtle’s stomach
Hundreds of shards reveal the threat to wildlife from debris floating in our seas
By Adam Sherwin
Thursday, 24 March 2011
The debris from the stomach of a green sea turtle
This collection of hundreds of coloured, jagged shards could be a work of abstract art. But the objects in the photograph to the right are the contents of the stomach of a sea turtle that lost its battle with plastic pollution.
Environmentalists examined the stomach of the juvenile turtle found off the coast of Argentina. The bellyful of debris that they found is symptomatic of the increasing threat to the sea turtles from a human addiction to plastic.
Sea turtles often mistake plastic items for jellyfish or other food. Ingesting non-biodegradable ocean pollution can cause a digestive blockage and internal lacerations. The result can be debilitation, followed by death.
Humans currently produce 260 million tons of plastic a year. When those products are pulled into the sea’s currents, the plastics do not biodegrade but are broken into smaller pieces which are consumed by marine life at the bottom of the food chain. An examination of gastrointestinal obstruction in a green turtle found off Florida discovered that, over the course of a month, the animal’s faeces had contained 74 foreign objects, including “four types of latex balloons, different types of hard plastic, a piece of carpet-like material and two 2-4mm tar balls.”
The biggest rubbish “swill” is the North Pacific Gyre, known as the “great garbage patch”, which is the size of Texas and contains an estimated 3.5 million items of detritus, ranging from toys to toothbrushes.
“The oceans have become one giant refuse bin for all manner of plastics. All sea turtle species are particularly prone and may be seriously harmed,” according to the biologists Colette Wabnitz, from the University of British Columbia, and Wallace Nichols, of the California Academy of Sciences. In “Plastic Pollution: An Ocean Emergency”, they write: “Continued research on the impacts of plastic on the ocean environment and human health is likely to conclude the problem is worse than currently understood.
“The symptom of this growing crisis can be seen inside and on sea turtles as well as their oceanic and terrestrial habitats. Bold initiatives that directly confront the source of plastic pollution, redesign packaging and rethink the very idea of ‘throwaway culture’ are urgently required.”
Almost all marine species, from plankton to whales, have ingested plastic. But, even in small quantities, plastic can kill sea turtles due to obstruction of the oesophagus or perforation of the bowel, the biologists said.
Fifty out of 92 turtles found dead, stranded on the shorelines of Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil, had ingested a “considerable amount of man-made debris”.
Because young sea turtles indiscriminately feed on pelagic material, “high occurrences of plastic are common in the digestive tract of these small sea turtles,” the biologists write.
They are asking visitors to help reduce the threat from plastics during visits to coastal areas by bringing their own reusable bags and food containers, and avoiding plastic-bottled drinks.
This is the wedding dress for the bride of a dear old friend. They are getting married this summer barefoot in the grass by the side of a lake – good ole’ hippie style. On a little road trip to Montreal this January they made time to shop for her dress at my store. We wanted something off the rack that could be customized for her to feel self-expressed and unique. Working with fabric pins and scarfettes, we were able to come up with an embellishment that suited her curves and colouring. Look at how the blue leaves bring out her stunning blue eyes. The side slit on the dress is actually quite racey and the sheer voile just barely covers her bum. Somehow she pulls it off perfectly, looking both classy and cute and sexy and just perfectly “Lena”.
When we took the dress back to the studio, i steamed all the pins off the back of the embellishments and stitched them to the dress. On the back of the dress, I continued the stitching of an ivy and leaf pattern in blue and bronze coloured thread. I added some sequins by hand and voila! A custom dress is born!
It was a true honour for me to be asked to make her wedding dress. Every time a friend asks me to make their dress, i feel really blessed and happy.

More and more businesses recognize the benefits of having animals around. Did you know that employees at Google headquarters can bring their pets to work? In fact, they are actually encouraged to?

Many companies, recognize that animals make us better people. They align us with our values. They help awaken our senses. Their needs are simple – a bowl of food here, a trip to the vet there – but it’s enough to keep us in a healthy rhythm ourselves. It’s enough to keep us on track.
Pets make us more productive, and certainly more creative.
Artists have long understood the importance of keeping pets around. Mary Oliver wrote an incredible book of poetry mostly inspired by her morning walks with her dog. Sarah McLachlan attributes getting through one long creative block to her companionship with her pup. I know some of my best ideas are the ones I first share with my cat.

Animals can sense the things we’re often desensitized to. They know when we need a snuggle, a hand-licking, or when we need to play. They also know when we need some fresh air. What’s better – and healthier – than a cigarette break? A dog-walking break!

- prints from Katrin Leblond’s spring collection
One of Katrin Leblond’s, um, more furry of team members is Arthur, Kat’s brother’s dog. He hangs out a lot at the studio, keeping the team company. Does he earn his keep? You betcha. The creative inspiration he brings to the workspace, as well as his boundless ability to love, is priceless. It’s a treat to be in the studio or boutique when Arthur’s around. He just has a way of keeping everything more real.
Much of Kat’s new spring collection was inspired by animals. Monkeys, fish, and elephants all made their way into her latest designs. However, I believe that more art than we give credit for is inspired, in one way or another, by the pets in our lives.

Katrin Leblond’s new spring season was inspired by a wish.
Well, actually, three wishes.

A rack-full of new spring wear!
When it came time to draw up themes for this new collection, Kat was ready to try something new. She sat down her whole creative team, and asked them to write down their three wishes for humanity.
She collected these three wishes, some in English and some in French, and read through them. There were many overlaps – wishes for the health of the oceans, for endangered animals like elephants and monkeys, wishes for clean and safe foods, wishes for the forests. There were wishes for the emancipation of children, for the heart of humanity to be wide open, and for all people to enjoy the warmth of the sun.
“I wanted these wishes to be the inspiration behind the collection,” Kat explained to me, “but I also wanted to make sure that my intent was clear.” She wanted to tap into not just her visual impression of these wishes, but that of the collective consciousness. In today’s world, that means paying a trip to Google.
Kat sat down at her computer and entered every wish, word-for-word, into google-image. She leafed through the images, and absorbed.
Google-image was able to make free associations that no single designer would have been able to make on her own. The wealth of inspiration was overwhelming.

The pattern from a dress inspired by native women
“Images kept coming up of spiritual leaders,” Kat told me, “that I never would have associated with some of these wishes, but there they were. We were talking about using the colour grey, and I had no ideas for that, but then I typed in ‘elephants’ and all this grey imagery came up!”
Little by little, groups of this new collection will appear at the Boutique. One group has already been released, which is inspired by First Nations women and is rich with earth tones and sandy hues.

earth tones abound in the first group of springwear
Other treats we have to look forward to are a Garden Vegetable Skirt, a Planet Earth Skirt, and lots of elephant motifs, leaf appliqués and ocean imagery.
And we’re keeping it close to the source. “The wish that inspired the piece will be tagged on the hanger of each garment, so that people can know what it means,” Kat tells me. “I want to think of each garment as a magic spell that we’re putting out into the world for humanity.”
A magic spell wished for by the women who made these garments with their own hands, no doubt weaving their intentions into each fold of fabric.

It should indeed be a magical spring at Boutique Katrin Leblond.

Come by for one of the most original fashion events ever.
How cool is it to have a day dedicated to love. Isn’t everyday? Shouldn’t it be that there is only one day a year to celebrate our conflicts because every moment we live is a chance to celebrate that we love.
Every year I try to think up some very simple way to say I love you to as many people as I can on Valentines day.
Today is a good day to leave anonymous love notes in all your neighbors mail boxes. It is a good day to stand on the street corner a give away 100 roses to random strangers. It is a good day to say thank you lots.
Here is a video I have offered you before but here it is again because it is great to watch on Valentine’s day.
When you give the gift of love you give a gift to your self.

Roses are the Rolls Royce of ornamental flowers. They are cultural symbols of beauty, love, femininity, sex and virginity (figure that one out…). There’s a reason why the walls of Boutique Katrin Leblond are covered in beautiful rose prints.
It was Katrin’s brother Nick that stenciled the roses all over the back wall of the boutique. Here is Cassandra posing in Katrin Leblond designs in front of the rose wall.
Why do we assign the rose so much power?
Roses have long been associated with various goddesses. Isis the Goddess of fertility, and Aphrodite (or Venus) the Goddess of beauty and sexual attraction, are both represented by the red rose. Perhaps the folds and folds of red petals conveys certain imagery of feminine fertility. That, and the sheer beauty of them is so pristine.

The Virgin Mary however is also often compared to a rose. Two of my favorite Christmas carols are all about Mary as this very beautiful flower. The German carol “Lo how a Rose ere blooming” talks about the Virgin “blooming” with life in the dead of winter. Another carol, a medieval English one, describes Mary: “there is no rose of such virtue as is the rose that bear Jesus.” Here is a rose window in a French cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary:
Roses are beautiful, delicate, and lovely. But they also have a dark side. They have thorns.
Certain Christian mystics liken the five petals of the red rose to the five wounds of Christ. The “crown of thorns” draws on the darker side of the rose – the pain, the suffering, the agony.
I suppose these two sides of the rose make it the perfect paradox to symbolize love. Love is beautiful, love is pristine, love is pure. Love also hurts. Even the most stable of partnerships encounter pain. Life, after all, consists of both light and shadows.

As we give and receive roses at this time of year, it’s nice to stop and think about these different aspects of the rose. They are both lusty and virginal. Eternal and fragile. Gentle yet thorned.

We can appreciate their beauty, their fragility, and their simple radiance. We can also appreciate their thorns.

They say you can’t throw a stone in Montreal without hitting a church. Well, in Austin Texas, where I just spent a week’s vacation, you can’t throw a stone without hitting an image of the Guadalupe Virgin or the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
I wasn’t raised with any Catholic education, so I was unfamiliar with the Sacred Heart. On this trip, as I began to see so many beautiful hearts all over town, in boutiques, on murals, and even just on keychains, I noticed I was really drawn to them.

We LOVE hearts at Boutique Katrin Leblond. Just look at our logo.

The heart’s bursting over with flowers, just like many sacred hearts burst with flames.
They say that, in Catholicism, the Sacred Heart of Jesus represents Jesus’ divine love for humanity. I like to think that when people enter the boutique, they are nurtured and inspired to show divine love towards themselves. We want every woman to feel they are entering a temple that worships the beauty that exists in all of us, inside and out.
I left Texas with a little hand-made Sacred Heart made out of tin that I bought from a Mexican artist. I’ve hung it over my work desk, so that the radiance of that divine self-love may carry me through my work days, and inspire me to be my best self.
Like a new dress or scarf, this little Heart of mine is a simple gift to myself that makes me feel special and loved. Come on by the Boutique and you’re bound to find something that does the same for you!

Kat is currently working on a costume for Ann Bernard Montreal premium boleadoras artist.
This is the second post of a new thread on this blog called The Goddess Series, profiling goddesses from all different cultures and finding a little place for them at our Boutique.
This week’s Goddess: Diana the Huntress.

Diana, Goddess of the Hunt
Diana: Who is she?
Diana is the Roman Goddess of the Hunt. Clothed in animal skins and dwelling deep in forests of oak, she represents creation, motherhood, and all earthly survival instincts. Diana is a huntress, which means she is ever-moving. She elusive and evading, keeping company with the sacred forests, and evading the grasp of those who might want to claim her for their own.
Her solitary, mysterious nature has led her also to be associated with chastity and virginity. She is also a lunar goddess in many cultures.

Introverted and elusive, Diana prefers the deep forests to the company of others
What Does Diana teach us?
Diana is the wild-woman spirit within each of us. She is present when we feel intuitive connections to land, or when we feel deep survival instincts towards ourselves or our kin. She is the power behind pregnancy and women’s physical mysteries. Diana teaches us to trust our wild side, follow our instincts, and delve into the shadows of our psychic lives.

Where Diana Lives at Boutique Katrin Leblond
Diana can be found in the earth tones of Katrin Leblond’s new spring collection, wearing prints that celebrate the health of our planet. She can be found in the knitted shawls, scarves and ponchos that envelop women in warmth and give us a touch of mystery. She can be found in the hearts of every woman that leaves the dressing room, feeling like they’ve just unleashed a hidden side of themselves with the new garments they’ve found.

Aux Vivres is hands-down one of my favorites places to eat in Montreal. The unique, creative and absurdly-delicious food it serves up is made even yummier by its clean, open ambiance, local wall-art, and inviting staff. It makes an equally great spot for a business lunch, a quick takeout, an anniversary date or a birthday dinner. This famously beautiful restaurant is not only 100% vegan – it’s deliciously affordable.

love by the bowlful at Aux Vivres
Boutique Katrin Leblond loves Aux Vivres. Not only are they our beloved next-door neighbour, but Mike, the chef and co-owner, just happens to be Katrin’s husband.
Everything there is delicious. The chickpea curry is yummy and authentic, while the huge salads are the stuff that dreams are made of (mmmm….just thinking about the seaweed and kraut toppings with ginger dressing in the Living Salad makes me salivate). It’s one of the few places that a giant sandwich will leave you feeling full and nourished. Do not underestimate the power of their hot-from-the-oven cornbread, smothered with vegan butter. Washed down with a glass of fresh-pressed apple-ginger juice, you’re bound finish your meal feeling alive and refreshed.

tofu scramble, vegan bacon, sweet potato homefries and cornbread? Brunch doesn't get better than this.
Perhaps the most legendary of all beasts on the Aux Vivres menu is the BLT sandwich. Stuffed with chips of smoked, slightly sweetened coconut, mounds of fresh lettuce and tomato, and drizzled with vegan mayo, this is a sandwich that knows no match. It may just be the yummiest thing you can eat in Montreal.

The legendary Vegan BLT.
So go check out Aux Vivres. Stop by for a chocolate smoothie, then pop into Boutique Katrin Leblond to find some special treasures, and then go back to Aux Vivres again and reward yourself with a splendid dinner. The ladies at Katrin Leblond will dress you with as much love as the good folks at Aux Vivres will feed you. You’re bound to leave the ‘hood radiant and renewed.

Valentine’s day is on it’s way. It’s a great time to find yourself your little red dress. Quickly becoming more of a wardrobe basic than it’s inferior rival the little black dress, Katrin Leblond boutique offers you several choice stunners to help unleash the diva, drama queen, seductress in you.
This is the fabulous Karin Maren Haglund: circus performer, fashion show artistic director, wife, mother and great friend.
I love that I get to make her costumes. I feel honoured that she chooses me time and time again as her costume designer. This was our newest collaboration. It ‘s for her wheel act.
It highlights her fantastically toned sexy-mama body and swooshes when she moves. The body suit is a one piece with gaucho wing legs. The back and straps are a-symmetrical with crisscrossing lines, ruffles and an amazing beaded collar piece that I saved from one of my grandmothers old Parisian haute-couture dresses. I am very proud of this creation.
Here are some casual pictures that she took backstage posing and looking adorable. Room #6.
Krin on tour with her little munchkin circus child Ole.
Not only does she blow me away with her talent and showmanship, her amazing ability to entertain, but she is a great role model for how to have a kid and still be yourself.
Love of love to all the circus families that just do it! -Kat
